Koza Han
Osmangazi, Bursa
A han with a two-story courtyard and a small masjid at its center; for centuries the heart of the silk cocoon trade.
Its story
Koza Han was built in 1490–1491, in the reign of Bayezid II, directly opposite the Ulu Mosque; its revenue was endowed to the Bayezid Complex in Istanbul. In the middle of the two-story arcaded courtyard is a small masjid set on top of an octagonal ablution fountain (şadırvan). The han takes its name from the silkworm cocoon (koza) trade; the tradition of holding a cocoon market here every June continued for a long time. Today the courtyard has tea gardens and shops selling silk goods. It is the best-known building in the Hanlar (Inns) District, part of Bursa's UNESCO World Heritage listing.
