Orhan Gazi Mosque and Complex
Osmangazi, Bursa
The mosque of the first major Ottoman complex, founded by Orhan Gazi in 1339 in the hans district, which shaped the city's commercial center.
Its story
After the capture of Bursa, Orhan Gazi had a complex of a mosque, soup kitchen (imaret), hammam and hans built in what is today the city's bazaar district. The mosque, with its inverted-T plan and side iwans, is one of the typical examples of early Ottoman architecture. Damaged in the Karamanid raid and in later earthquakes, the building was repaired several times. The Emir Han and the bazaar around the complex show that the city's commercial life developed around this building. It is one of the components of the Bursa and Cumalıkızık UNESCO World Heritage site.
