Boğazköy Museum
Boğazkale, Çorum
A museum displaying works found in the Hattusa excavations and the two Hittite sphinxes returned from Berlin; the starting point of a tour of the archaeological site.
Its story
The museum in the Boğazkale district center opened on 12 September 1966 and was completely rearranged in 2011. The display begins with works from the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age and the Assyrian Trade Colonies period, and continues with the Hittite, Phrygian, Galatian, Roman and Byzantine periods. The museum's most famous pieces are the two sphinxes from the Sphinx Gate at Hattusa: of the statues taken to Berlin for repair in 1907, one returned to Istanbul in 1924 and the other to Türkiye in 2011, and both have been displayed together here since 26 November 2011. The Hittite hall explains the state and social structure, religion, army and writing system; there are models of the Great Temple and the archaeological site. The garden has stones with Hittite hieroglyphs and Roman and Byzantine milestones.
