Çorum Museum
Merkez, Çorum
The provincial museum displaying finds from Alacahöyük, Hattusa and Shapinuwa, in a historic building built as a hospital in 1914.
Its story
The Çorum Museum first opened in 1968; as the collection grew, it moved to the historic building whose construction began in 1908 and was completed in 1914, and which was used as a hospital, an agricultural school and a vocational college. The building, which suffered a fire in 1988, was restored and opened as a museum on 11 March 2003. In the archaeology hall, the chronological display starting with Chalcolithic works from Alacahöyük and Kuşsaray continues with finds from the Early Bronze Age Resuloğlu cemetery, a faithfully re-created Alacahöyük tomb, and Hittite and Phrygian works from Hattusa, Shapinuwa, Eskiyapar and Pazarlı. The ethnography section re-creates Çorum's coppersmithing, leblebi-making and coffeehouse culture. The building is registered as a cultural asset to be protected.
