Tavas, Denizli
An ancient Carian city on the Tavas plateau, named after Heracles.
Its story
Herakleia Salbake is a Carian city founded on the southern foothills of the Salbakos (Babadağ) mountains, around Kızılcabölük in Tavas. It takes its name from the demigod hero Heracles and was also known by other names such as Heraclea ad Albanum. A theater, sarcophagi and inscriptions have survived from the city, which minted coins in the Roman period. Together with nearby Apollonia Salbake, it forms the ancient settlement network of the Tavas plain.
