Hierapolis Theater
Pamukkale, Denizli
Set into the slope under Hadrian, one of the best-preserved theaters in Anatolia, with reliefs on its stage building.
Its story
Set against the city's eastern slope, the theater was built in the 2nd century AD under Emperor Hadrian. The stage building was renewed under Septimius Severus with rich reliefs showing mythological scenes and the city's gods. Its facade and seating rows, restored and re-erected, also provide a viewing terrace over the travertines and the valley. On a visit to Hierapolis it is the stop that requires a climb but repays the effort most.
