Gazi Pavilion (Gazi Köşkü)
Yenişehir, Diyarbakır
An Akkoyunlu-period pavilion among the gardens of the Tigris valley, used by Atatürk as his headquarters in 1916–1917.
Its story
The building, formerly known as the Semanoğlu Pavilion, is accepted as a 15th-century Akkoyunlu work. During the First World War, Mustafa Kemal, commander of the 16th Army Corps, used the pavilion as his headquarters from 14 March 1916 to 27 March 1917. The Diyarbakır Municipality bought the building in 1937 and presented it to Atatürk. Built of black and white cut stone, the two-story pavilion with a large iwan is a country-house interpretation of Diyarbakır house architecture; the upper floor has a study and bedrooms, and belongings of Atatürk are on display. The grounds of the pavilion are open to the public as a recreation and rest area; it is on the road to the Ten-Eyed Bridge.
