Its story
Before Elazığ was founded, Harput was the administrative center of the region; it lost its population when the provincial center moved to Mezre (present-day Elazığ) on the plain in 1834 and through migrations in the early 20th century, and in 1981 it was incorporated into the Elazığ municipal boundaries. It lies on a plateau at about 1,250–1,450 meters, on cliffs overlooking the Uluova plain. Today the castle, the Artuqid-period Ulu and Alacalı mosques, the Akkoyunlu-period Sarahatun Mosque, the Ottoman-period Kurşunlu Mosque, the Church of the Virgin Mary, baths, fountains and many tombs of holy figures can be explored on foot within the same historic fabric. Harput was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2018. The area also has a bazaar selling local handmade products and venues where Harput music is kept alive; allow at least half a day for a visit.
