Rüstem Paşa Bedesten (Taşhan)
Yakutiye, Erzurum
A two-story courtyard han built in the 16th century in the name of Grand Vizier Rüstem Paşa; today the city's Oltu stone bazaar, with the workshops and shops of Oltu stone craftsmen.
Its story
The building, also known as the Taşhan or Rüstem Paşa Caravanserai, was built in the mid-16th century, probably between 1544 and 1561, in the name of Rüstem Paşa, son-in-law and grand vizier of Süleyman the Magnificent. It consists of two stories of rooms arranged around a rectangular courtyard; the ground floor has more than thirty cells. Repaired by the Foundations directorate in the 20th century, the han is now full of small workshops where Oltu stone, one of Erzurum's symbols, is worked and sold. Visitors walking around the courtyard can see up close how prayer beads, jewelry and ornaments are carved. It is within the historic bazaar fabric between the Pervizoğlu Mosque and the Boyahane Hammam.
