Coppersmiths' Bazaar (Bakırcılar Çarşısı)
Şahinbey, Gaziantep
A historic bazaar at the foot of the castle where Gaziantep's centuries-old copperwork is still carried on in the shops.
Its story
Named after the copper goods hammered and worked here, the bazaar is the center of Gaziantep's roughly four-century-old coppersmithing tradition. In the narrow, shaded streets, amid the sound of the craftsmen's hammers, you can watch trays (sini), pots, coffee pots (cezve) and ornaments being shaped; 'Gaziantep Bakır El İşlemeciliği' (Gaziantep copper handcraft) is registered with TÜRKPATENT as a geographical indication. The bazaar is part of the historic commercial fabric linking the Zincirli Bedesten, the Tahmis Coffeehouse, the Tütün Han and the castle; shops selling mother-of-pearl inlay and kutnu fabric are also concentrated nearby. The workshops are busier in the morning.
