Its story
Balat and its neighbor Fener are Golden Horn neighborhoods where Greek Orthodox, Jewish and Armenian communities lived side by side from the Byzantine to the Ottoman period. Along the sloping streets, 19th-century terraced masonry and wooden houses stand side by side with buildings such as the Ahrida Synagogue, the Bulgarian Church of St. Stephen (Sveti Stefan) and the Phanar Greek Orthodox College (Fener Rum Erkek Lisesi). Many facades were repaired during street rehabilitation work in the 2000s. Today the area has become a favorite of photographers and those looking for a walking route.
