Beyazıt Tower
Fatih, İstanbul
A masonry tower rising in the garden of İstanbul University, built in 1828 as a fire watchtower.
Its story
When the first wooden watchtower on this hill was damaged in fires, the present stone tower was built in 1828 in the reign of Mahmud II. Reaching about 85 meters in height, the tower was one of the main points from which the city's fire watchers kept an eye on İstanbul. When a fire broke out at night, colored lanterns were hung to tell the public in which neighborhood the fire was. The tower stands within the university's Beyazıt campus, and its interior is not open to general visitors.
