Dolmabahçe Clock Tower
Beşiktaş, İstanbul
A four-sided Neo-Baroque clock tower built in the 1890s in front of Dolmabahçe Palace.
Its story
The tower was built by the architect Sarkis Balyan between 1890 and 1895 on the orders of Sultan Abdülhamid II. With clock faces on all four sides, the structure combines European styles with Ottoman ornamentation. The clock mechanism is French-made, and the tower also has measuring instruments such as a thermometer and a barometer. At the entrance to the palace garden, the tower is part of the skyline on the Bosphorus shore.
