Otağ-ı Hümâyun (Davutpaşa Imperial Pavilion)
Esenler, İstanbul
A stone pavilion on YTÜ's Davutpaşa Campus, with origins in the 15th century, from which the sultan saw off the army leaving on campaign; now a cultural center.
Its story
The building, also known as the Davut Paşa Pavilion, the Taş Köşk (Stone Pavilion) or the Hünkâr Kasrı (Imperial Pavilion), stands in the Davutpaşa Plain on the old road from Topkapı to Edirne. According to tradition, the first pavilion was built around 1483 by Koca Davud Paşa; some researchers, however, link the building to the reign of Mehmed III and to Dalgıç Ahmed Ağa. The army setting out on European campaigns gathered on this plain, and when the sultan did not join the campaign, the troops were seen off from the pavilion. It is reported that the pavilion was repaired by Krikor Amira Balyan during the construction of the Davutpaşa Barracks built next to it in the 19th century. The site was transferred to Yıldız Technical University in 1999; following restoration as part of İstanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture, the building opened as a cultural center in December 2010. The Davutpaşa Barracks, built between 1826 and 1832, and a historic fountain can also be seen nearby.
