Sahaflar Çarşısı (Old Book Bazaar)
Fatih, İstanbul
A small courtyard bazaar between the Grand Bazaar and the Beyazıt Mosque, where booksellers have bought and sold books for centuries.
Its story
The bazaar lies right next to the western gate of the Grand Bazaar, in an area where paper and book trading also took place in the Byzantine period. In the Ottoman period it became the gathering place especially of sellers of manuscripts and printed books. Today the shops around the plane-shaded courtyard sell old books, academic publications, and samples of calligraphy and miniatures. In the middle of the courtyard is a bust of İbrahim Müteferrika, who founded the first printing press in Türkiye.
