Siyavuşpaşa Pavilion
Bahçelievler, İstanbul
A pavilion with a pool in Bahçelievler reflecting 16th-century Ottoman civil architecture, commissioned by Siyavuş Paşa, three times grand vizier.
Its story
The exact construction date of the pavilion, popularly known as the Havuzlu Köşk (Pavilion with a Pool), is unknown; it is estimated to have been built in 1571-72. It was commissioned by Siyavuş Paşa, who was recruited from the Kanije region, trained in the Enderun (palace school) and served as grand vizier three times. Although its architect is not mentioned in the records, it is attributed to Mimar Sinan because of its period and style. Despite later additions and alterations, the pavilion largely preserves the features of 16th-century Ottoman civil architecture. In Mithat Cemal Kuntay's novel Üç İstanbul, the pavilion's ruined state is described, referring to it as a work of Sinan.
