Forbes Mansion and the Levantine Mansions of Buca
Buca, İzmir
The best known of the garden mansions used as summer homes by İzmir's Levantine merchant families in the 19th century.
Its story
In the 19th century Buca was a summer resort where Levantine families of British, French and Italian origin built mansions with large gardens. Forbes Mansion, on the large estate of one of the wealthiest of these families, is one of the buildings reflecting the lifestyle of the period. Nearby are buildings such as the De Jongh Mansion, the Pembe Köşk (Pink Mansion) and the English Protestant Chapel dated 1838. As most of the mansions are used as institutional buildings, their interiors are not always open to visitors.
