Çakırağa Mansion
Ödemiş, İzmir
An 18th-century Ottoman mansion in Birgi, famous for the painted views of Istanbul and İzmir on its walls.
Its story
The mansion was commissioned between 1761–1764 by Çakıroğlu Mehmet Bey, a wealthy merchant. In the three-story timber building, the ground floor consists of the stone-floored hall (taşlık), kitchen and stable; the second floor of winter rooms and the third of summer rooms. The painted (kalem işi) scenes of Istanbul and İzmir covering the walls of the upper rooms, the wood carvings and the ceiling decoration reflect the style of the period. It has been restored and opened to visitors as a museum.
