Namazgâh Hammam
Konak, İzmir
A historic domed Ottoman hammam with a double-hammam plan, right next to the Agora of Smyrna.
Its story
Although the exact construction date of the hammam in the Namazgâh quarter, next to the Agora excavation site, is unknown, it is dated to the 16th century. It has the plan of a double hammam with two matching sections for women and men; the changing room, warm room and hot room sections are covered by domes and vaults. Built of cut stone and brick, the building has moved somewhat away from its original form through repairs in different periods. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality expropriated the building and had it restored in 2018. It is one of the old hammams still standing in the city center that can be seen on a tour of the Agora and Kemeraltı.
