Its story
With about 2000 traditional Turkish houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, Safranbolu is one of the best-preserved settlements on an urban scale and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The houses are concentrated in the 'Şehir' (Çarşı) area, used in winter, and the 'Bağlar' area, used in summer. The bazaar area developed around the Cinci Hanı, the Köprülü Mehmet Paşa Mosque and the İzzet Mehmet Paşa Mosque. In the arasta beside the Köprülü Mosque there are today shoemakers', yemeni makers' and souvenir shops. With its cobblestone streets, fountains and mansion guesthouses, the area is best explored on foot.
