History and archaeology / Han and caravanserai
Gökçeağaç Han
Hanönü, Kastamonu
An old caravanserai building, claimed to be of church origin, which gave the district its name.
Its story
Hanönü has been a stopping place throughout history on the road passing through the Gökırmak valley, and the district also took its name from this han. Built of rubble stone and Horasan mortar, the han is about 20.5 m long and 11 m wide; in the interior, entered through a round-arched door, there are four piers of cut stone in their lower parts and brick above, and barrel-vaulted coverings. At the beginning of the 19th century, the French consul in Sinop wrote that the building had been built as a three-part church in the time of Justinian and used by the Turks as a caravanserai. A traveler who toured the region in 1848 also recorded it as an old caravanserai. The building, which remained in ruins for a long time, is planned to be restored and used as a library and museum.
