Its story
Kastamonu Castle is associated with 'Kastra Komnenon', built by the Byzantine commander Manuel Erotikos Komnenos, who ruled the region in the 10th century; the city's name is accepted as being derived from this name. The castle was taken by the Çobanoğulları on behalf of the Anatolian Seljuks, and then passed into the hands of the Candarids and the Ottomans. The inner castle, repaired in the Candarid period, has partly survived; it is known to have had 15 bastions and a secret passage descending to the outer castle. Damaged in the 1943 Tosya-Ladik earthquake, the castle was partly restored in 2005. From the hilltop, the clock tower, Nasrullah Square and the city's red roofs are seen from a wide angle.
