Kayseri Clock Tower
Kocasinan, Kayseri
A 15-meter cut-stone clock tower in Cumhuriyet Square, built in 1906 by order of Abdülhamid II.
Its story
The Kayseri Clock Tower was built in 1906 with the support of the mutasarrıf (district governor) Haydar Bey and the craftsmanship of Tavlusunlu Salih Usta. Inside the square-plan cut-stone tower is a spiral staircase; the clock mechanism brought from Leipzig drives the dials facing in four directions. Kayseri delegates returning from the Sivas Congress opened the Kayseri branch of the Society for the Defense of Rights (Müdafaa-i Hukuk Cemiyeti) here. The tower, symbol of the square between the castle and the bazaar, is a meeting point in the city center.
