Hunting Lodge (Kasr-ı Hümâyun) Palace Museum
İzmit, Kocaeli
A wooden hunting lodge built for Sultan Abdülaziz in the 19th century, where Atatürk also stayed.
Its story
The pavilion, also known as Kasr-ı Hümâyun, was built in the second half of the 19th century for Sultan Abdülaziz's hunting trips around İzmit. The wooden building, with its painted (kalem işi) interior decoration and period furniture, reflects Western-influenced Ottoman palace architecture. Atatürk also stayed in this pavilion on his visits to İzmit. Today it is open to visitors as a museum under the National Palaces. It stands in the same historic area as the Clock Tower and the Archaeology Museum.
