İzmit Clock Tower
İzmit, Kocaeli
An elegant clock tower designed by the architect Vedat, built in 1901 for the 25th anniversary of Abdülhamid II's accession.
Its story
İzmit Clock Tower was built in 1901 for the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdülhamid II's accession to the throne. It was designed by the architect Vedat Tek, one of the pioneers of the Ottoman national architecture movement. With its stonework and Ottoman decorative elements, the four-story tower is one of the city's best-known buildings. Having survived the 1999 earthquake, the tower is part of the city's old administrative center together with the Hunting Lodge (Av Köşkü) right next to it and other historic buildings. Its evening lighting also makes it lovely for photographs.
