Tomb of Nasreddin Hoca
Akşehir, Konya
The tomb in Akşehir of Nasreddin Hoca, the symbol of humor; although it is open on all four sides, a huge lock hangs on its door.
Its story
The grave of Nasreddin Hoca, accepted as having died in Akşehir in 1284, was turned into a tomb over time; the building is estimated to have taken shape in the 14th century. The structure, consisting of two nested baldachins, was covered with a pyramidal cap in 1878 and repaired in 1906 by Faik Bey, Governor of Konya. The lock hung on the front door, even though the tomb is open on all four sides, is interpreted as a reference to the Hoca's sense of humor. The park around it is decorated with statues re-creating scenes from the Hoca's anecdotes. The International Nasreddin Hoca Festival, held every July, brings the town to life.
