Tomb of Seyyid Mahmud Hayrânî
Akşehir, Konya
The 13th-century tomb of the Sufi Seyyid Mahmud Hayrânî, a contemporary of Rumi, at the foot of the Sultan Mountains, and the masjid in its garden.
Its story
Mahmud-ı Hayrânî is accepted as having died in Akşehir in 1268; it is said that he met Rumi and settled in Akşehir. Although there is no definite record of the tomb's construction date, the date 1268 on the sarcophagus suggests that the building also belongs to this period; according to an inscription, its architect was Asilzade Abdullah. The tomb with a pyramidal cap decorated with turquoise tiles is, together with the Ferruhşah Masjid in the same garden, part of the historic fabric in the south of Akşehir.
