Its story
Ladik is a settlement founded on the site of the ancient city of Laodicea Katakekaumene (Laodicea Combusta), founded by Seleucus I; reused ancient stones are still found in the village. The first construction of the Ladik Ulu Mosque, also popularly called the Büyük (Great), Eski (Old) or Yukarı (Upper) Mosque, is traced back to 1290; its present state belongs, according to the inscription on the door, to the 1895 renovation, while the date 1797 appears on the mihrab. Four rows of five wooden posts divide the prayer hall into five aisles; among the painted decorations on the walls are a depiction of a masjid and calligraphy within geometric and plant panels. The wooden mihrab and minbar are decorated with motifs worked in openwork (ajur) technique on green, blue and red grounds; the preaching chair shows edirnekâri (lacquered) decoration. A single-balcony brick minaret rises at the northeast corner.
