Meram Vineyards and Meram Bridge
Meram, Konya
A historic valley of vineyards and gardens along the Meram Çayı, praised by Evliya Çelebi; the Seljuk-period Meram Bridge and the Tavus Baba Tomb.
Its story
For centuries Meram was the summer vineyards and recreation area of the people of Konya; Evliya Çelebi writes that he held the 'Bağ-ı Meram' (Garden of Meram) superior to the gardens of Istanbul and Tabriz. The Meram Çayı (Meram Stream), coming from the direction of Altınapa, waters the gardens in the valley, and tea gardens line its banks. The five-span cut-stone Meram Bridge over the stream is dated to the Seljuk period; right nearby are the Tavus Baba Tomb and the Meram Hamam. The municipality has also laid out a new model vineyard in the area to keep alive the vineyard culture described by Evliya Çelebi. It is the city's favorite getaway for cooling off on summer evenings.
