Selimiye Mosque
Karatay, Konya
A classical Ottoman mosque with twin minarets right next to the Mevlânâ Museum, commissioned by Selim II when he was a prince.
Its story
The mosque was begun in 1558 by Prince Selim, who was the sanjak bey of Konya, and completed in 1570 after Selim came to the throne. Although it bears the style of the Mimar Sinan period, it does not appear in Sinan's lists of works. With its large central dome, arcaded narthex and two minarets, it recalls the early Ottoman imperial mosques in Istanbul. Its mihrab is of colored marble and its minbar of white marble. It was repaired in 1685, 1816 and 1914. With its location in Mevlânâ Square, it is the natural continuation of a visit to the museum.
