Its story
Excavations at Çelbira, northwest of Mardin, uncovered 105 cisterns and 10 grape-crushing areas dating back to the 4th century AD. For this reason the site is presented as one of the oldest grape presses of antiquity. Rock-cut tombs lie on the slopes, and the remains of a church on the southern slope. The fact that residents of the surrounding villages still prepare products such as pekmez (grape molasses) and pestil (fruit leather) here shows that the centuries-old viticulture tradition lives on. In the direction of the Zınnar vineyards, it suits a nature and archaeology trip close to the city center.
