Its story
The foundations of the monastery, about 23 km southeast of Midyat, were laid in 397 by Mor Şmuel (Samuel) and his disciple Mor Şemun (Simeon). Rapidly growing with donations from Roman emperors, the building gained sections such as the churches of the Virgin Mary and the Forty Martyrs, the sanctuary of Mor Şmuel and the Theodora Dome, named after an emperor's daughter. Also known as Deyrulumur, meaning dwelling of monks, and as the Kartmin Monastery after the old village nearby, it takes its name from Mor Gabriel, the 7th-century Metropolitan of Tur Abdin. It is impressive with its Byzantine-era mosaics, domes and walls of Midyat stone. Today it is still an active monastery where monks and nuns live; it is among the Tur Abdin buildings added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2021.
