Its story
Savur, whose name is said to derive from the Syriac word 'savro', meaning neck, is built on a mountain slope about 47 km from Mardin. A settlement since the Roman, Byzantine and Sasanian periods, the district center presents a historic appearance with its castle, rock houses, old Ulu Mosque and stone mansions. From the castle hill a wide view opens down to the stone houses below and the Savur Çayı (Savur Stream) valley. Also known as the hometown of the Nobel laureate scientist Aziz Sancar, the district is well suited to a quiet trip with its old fabric.
