Its story
While the inscription on the minaret base links the building to 1176 and to Kutbettin İlgazi, Malik of Diyarbakır, another inscription in the courtyard points to 1186 and the Artuqid Hüsameddin Yavlak Arslan. According to records the mosque was built with two minarets; its only minaret standing today was rebuilt in 1888-1889 in an eclectic style. The segmented dome, formed by ribs on the outside, became a tradition in Mardin architecture in later centuries, and many surrounding buildings followed this model. The transversely developed prayer hall, the dome in front of the mihrab and the rectangular courtyard to the north are the basic elements of the Artuqid plan. Damaged during Timur's invasion, the building was repaired in the Ottoman period and in 2010-2012. The mosque, reached by narrow streets descending through the bazaars, is open for worship; from the courtyard you can see the dome and minaret up close.
