Alahan Monastery
Mut, Mersin
A monastery on the UNESCO Tentative List on a slope overlooking the Göksu valley, with 5th-century basilicas and rich stone decoration.
Its story
The monastery complex was built on a terrace overlooking the valley in the foothills of the Taurus. The group of buildings, consisting of the West and East Churches, a baptistery and rock tombs, is one of the best-preserved examples of Early Byzantine architecture. The reliefs of angels and apostles on the door jambs are particularly striking. The site is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
