Its story
Frederick Barbarossa, Holy Roman Emperor, lost his life by drowning in the Göksu River, known in antiquity as the Saleph, on 10 June 1190 during the Third Crusade. In 1971 an inscribed memorial stone was erected by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany at a point near the place of his death. After road-widening work, a new monument, including a large statue of the emperor, was opened at its present location on 11 May 2012. The monument, beside the D.715 highway about 9 km west of Silifke, overlooks the Göksu valley.
