Elaiussa Sebaste Ancient City
Erdemli, Mersin
A coastal city built on a peninsula that was once an island, notable for the remains of a theater, an agora and a Byzantine palace.
Its story
The city was founded in the Hellenistic period and entered a brilliant period in Roman times under the rule of Archelaus, king of Cappadocia. It takes its name from the olive (elaia) and Sebastos, the Greek equivalent of the emperor Augustus. In excavations by Italian teams lasting many years, a theater, agora, baths and a Byzantine palace with mosaics were uncovered. The large necropolis around it stands out with its temple-type tombs.
