Yumuktepe Mound (Höyük)
Yenişehir, Mersin
A mound that is one of Anatolia's oldest continuous settlements, with layers going back to about 6300 BC.
Its story
The mound was first excavated at the end of the 1930s by the British archaeologist John Garstang, and more than 20 settlement levels were uncovered. The hill, inhabited almost without interruption from the Neolithic Age to the Middle Ages, now lies within the city, in the Demirtaş neighborhood. In the new excavations, Chalcolithic-period buildings and the remains of a palace were also found. A large part of the finds is displayed at the Mersin Archaeology Museum.
