Dalyan and the Dalyan Channel
Ortaca, Muğla
The reed-lined channel connecting Lake Köyceğiz to the sea, and the town on its bank facing the Kaunos rock tombs.
Its story
The Dalyan Channel is a natural strait that carries the waters of Lake Köyceğiz to the sea, winding for about 10 km. It takes its name from the traditional fish traps (dalyan) set up in the channel. Dalyan, on the eastern bank of the channel, is the starting point for boat tours; cooperative boats go to İztuzu Beach, Kaunos and the mud baths on Lake Köyceğiz. Declared Türkiye's first Special Environmental Protection Area in 1988, the area hosts rich birdlife in its reed beds.
