Niğde Castle
Merkez, Niğde
The castle surrounding the hill where old Niğde was founded, which gained importance in the Seljuk period and was repaired in 1740; the single standing bastion on the hill is the city's symbol.
Its story
Niğde Castle consists of inner and outer castles surrounding the hill where the old city stood; its foundations are thought to rest on much older structures. The castle grew in importance in the Anatolian Seljuk period, in the times of Kılıçarslan II, Süleyman Şah II and Alaeddin Keykubad I, and also played a role in the rebellion of Hatıroğlu Şerefeddin in 1276. It was repaired in 1740 in the time of Grand Vizier İshak Paşa. Although most of the walls have collapsed or been incorporated into the walls of houses, the rectangular bastion at the highest point of the hill is standing. The hill has today been surrounded by walls and laid out as a park.
