Sungurbey Mosque
Merkez, Niğde
A mosque commissioned around 1335 by Sungur Bey, governor of Niğde in the Ilkhanid period; famous for its Gothic-influenced portal and twelve-animal calendar reliefs.
Its story
The Sungurbey Mosque was commissioned around 1335 by Sungur Bey, governor of Niğde in the Ilkhanid period; it has no construction inscription and its architect is unknown. The east portal of the mosque, built entirely of stone, is notable for its Gothic-influenced ribbed cross vault; south of this portal is the tomb of Sungur Bey. The figures of the twelve-animal Turkish calendar among the plant decoration are the building's most interesting details. Having partly lost its original interior layout after a fire in the 18th century, the mosque reopened for worship in June 2026 after a comprehensive restoration by the General Directorate of Foundations.
