Tyana Ancient City and Roman Aqueducts
Bor, Niğde
The ancient city at Kemerhisar, the Hittites' Tuwanuwa and Rome's Tyana; about 1.5 km of its aqueducts, which carried water from the Roman Pool to the city, are still standing.
Its story
Kemerhisar, attached to the Bor district, is built on the ancient city that appears in the Hittite archives as Tuwanuwa, in the Iron Age as Tuwana, and took the name Tyana in the Roman period. In the Late Hittite period the city was the capital of a Luwian-speaking kingdom, and in the Roman period it twice became the center of southern Cappadocia. The aqueducts that gave the town its name (kemer: arch) were built to carry water to the city from the Roman Pool at Bahçeli; about 1.5 km of the roughly 4.3 km system is standing today. Excavations carried out by the University of Padua since 2000 are bringing to light the city's grandeur in the Roman period.
