Şanlıurfa Archaeology and Mosaic Museum
Eyyübiye, Şanlıurfa
One of Türkiye's largest museums, with finds from Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe, the 'Balıklıgöl Statue', considered the world's oldest life-size human statue, and re-creations.
Its story
The museum's collection began to be assembled in 1948; its first building opened in 1969. On 24 May 2015 it moved to its new complex in Haleplibahçe, about ten times the size of the old one. In the building, one of the largest museums in Türkiye in terms of indoor area and exhibition halls, works from the Neolithic to the Ottoman period are displayed chronologically, with many re-creations. The carved pillars and statues of Göbeklitepe, the finds from Karahantepe and the human statue about 11,000 years old found at Balıklıgöl stand out. Works rescued from mounds submerged by the waters of the GAP dams are also here. It is visited together with the Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum right next door.
