Its story
The building on Vali Fuat Bey Caddesi is known as the Church of the Twelve Apostles, used by the city's Armenian community; as there is no inscription, its exact construction date is debated. In the Ottoman period it was popularly called the 'Fırfırlı Church' because of decorations on it resembling a weathervane (fırfır). After the community left the city in the 1920s, it was used for a time as a prison, was converted into a mosque in 1956, and kept its name. The three-aisled basilical plan, built entirely of fine cut stone, was brought to light again by the restoration of the General Directorate of Foundations. It can be visited together with the Selahaddin Eyyubi Mosque opposite.
