Safety warning

Stay away from collapsed walls. In summer the temperature can exceed 40 °C; plan your visit for the morning or late afternoon, and carry a hat and plenty of water.

Its story

The caravanserai east of Harran, on the road leading to Şuayb City and Soğmatar, is an Ayyubid-period staging han commissioned in 1228–1229 (626 AH) by el-Hac Hüsameddin Ali Bey according to the inscription on its north facade, and is referred to as the only Ayyubid han in Anatolia. Its cut-stone courtyard plan can still be made out, despite the collapse, from the remains of the portal and the spaces surrounding the courtyard. The building, where caravans stopped on the trade route between Urfa, Harran and Mardin, is today an impressive ruin rising alone on the flat horizon of the plain and the first stop on the Tektek Mountains route.
