Its story
The Kızıl Madrasa (Medresa Sor, Medresetü'l-Hamra) rises in Cizre's Dağkapı neighborhood on the remains of the city's western walls, and bears this name because it is built largely of square red bricks. It is attributed to Emir Şeref in the period of the Cizre Principality; its construction date is given variously in sources as between the 14th century and the early 16th century. Around the arcaded open courtyard are a two-iwan madrasa, and in the south wing a masjid and a two-story tomb. The tomb is accepted as belonging to Molla Ahmed-i Cezîrî (Melayê Cizîrî), an important figure of classical Kurdish poetry; it is thought that the poet taught here. Repaired by the Foundations administration in 2007, the building opened to visitors after the completion of a comprehensive restoration. It is on the same walking axis as the Tomb of the Prophet Noah.
