History and archaeology / Mound (höyük)
Alişar Höyük
Sorgun, Yozgat
A city visited by Assyrian merchants, with layers stretching from the Neolithic to the Phrygian period, very probably the Kuššara of Hittite sources.
Its story
Alişar Höyük is north of the village of Alişar, attached to Sorgun, about 45 km southeast of Yozgat. The settlement began in the Neolithic period in the middle of a lake; expanding through the Chalcolithic and Bronze Ages, it was surrounded by gated walls in the Early Bronze Age and became the most important city in the region. In the 2nd millennium BC it was a trading center visited by Assyrian merchants; fifty-three Old Assyrian tablets found here document this period. It has been suggested that the city may be Kuššara, captured by the Hittite king Anitta. The University of Chicago excavations of 1927–1932 played a fundamental role in establishing the chronology of Central Anatolia.
