Karakız Hittite Quarry and Sculpture Workshop
Sorgun, Yozgat
A sculpture workshop in a Late Bronze Age Hittite quarry, with unfinished lion bases and a large basin.
Its story
Karakız is a large quarry from the Hittite Empire period (Late Bronze Age). Besides traces of stone extraction, unfinished works have been found at the site, such as two bases each carved from a single block and carried by a pair of lions, a large cylindrical block and a large basin. The lion statues are thought to have been made between 1400 and 1200 BC and intended to be dedicated to a sacred water source. The first finds were identified by the Yozgat Museum Directorate in 1982, and the site was registered as the 'Karakız Sculpture Workshop' in 2009. It is a rare place for seeing the stages of Hittite sculpture-making on site.
