Its story
Tavium was the largest city of the Trocmi, one of the three Celtic tribes that migrated from the Danube valley to Anatolia in the 3rd century BC. Thanks to its location at the crossing of major roads, it became a trading center, and in the Roman period it served as an important road junction and caravan stopping place. Ancient sources mention a giant bronze statue of Jupiter, revered by the Galatians, in the city's temple. The remains are today around the village of Büyüknefes, west of Yozgat; some of their stones have been used over time in surrounding buildings. The remains of an ancient theater have been identified at the site.
