Gedik Ahmed Paşa (İmaret) Hammam
Merkez, Afyonkarahisar
The 15th-century double hammam of the Gedik Ahmed Paşa Complex, still used for bathing today.
Its story
The hammam is part of the complex of mosque, madrasa and hammam that Grand Vizier Gedik Ahmed Paşa commissioned in Afyonkarahisar, and is believed to have been built around 1470, while the paşa was beylerbey of Anatolia. It has a double-hammam plan, with the men's section to the east and the women's section to the west, and covers an area of about 37.66 × 26.35 m. Its walls are of rubble stone, its domes and vaults of brick, with cut stone used for the doors and windows. The building was extensively restored by the General Directorate of Foundations in 1940 and still operates as a hammam today. It can be visited together with the İmaret Mosque and Taş Medrese within the same complex.
